NATO welcomes three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan

Washington: NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg and the US Special Representative Zalmay Khalilzad for Reconciliation have welcomed a three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan. They have said that the decision would pave the way for peace.

Mr. Stoltenberg tweeted on Saturday: “I welcome the statements by the government of #Afghanistan & the Taliban on a 3-day ceasefire over Eid. All parties should seize this opportunity for peace, for the benefit of all Afghans. #NATO remains committed to Afghanistan’s long-term security.

Mr. Khalilzad said in a tweet, “Other positive steps should immediately follow: the release of remaining prisoners as specified in the US-Taliban agreement by both sides, no returning to high levels of violence, and an agreement on a new date for the start of intra-Afghan negotiations. He said “Put d date for Da start of intra Afghans talk in order to make its way to realse from both sides”.

Meanwhile, US Special Envoy Khalilzad said that this opportunity for peace should not be missed. The United States will help.

The Taliban announced a three-day ceasefire in Afghanistan on the eve of Eid ul-Fitr on Saturday. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani welcomed the ceasefire announcement. He said the government was expanding the peace offer and ordered the Afghan National Defense Security Forces to implement the ceasefire, which took effect on Sunday. ۔
