Pakistan: Shahbaz Sharif arrested after bail plea rejected
Earlier this month, the Lahore High Court extended the bail period before Shahbaz’s arrest in view of the ongoing trial in the case.
Islamabad: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president and opposition leader in the National Assembly, Shahbaz Sharif, was arrested on Monday in the Lahore High Court in the money laundering case after his bail plea was rejected.
Earlier this month, the Lahore High Court extended the bail period before Shahbaz’s arrest in view of the ongoing trial in the case. His lawyer was directed to complete the inquiry by the next date.
PML-Nawaz’s Information Secretary Maryam Aurangzeb has alleged that his arrest has been made under a political conspiracy. She said that the government was targeting him and his arrest is being held hostage throughout the country.
Shahbaz’s (PML-N president) legal adviser, Azam Nazir Tarad, said that his arrest during the hearing in the case could not be justified in any way and it exposed the dishonesty of the National Accountability Bureau.
Tarad told the Court that the former chief minister of Punjab had a total savings of 81 billion rupees in the Orange Rail project and Rs 40 crore in the taxi project. Thus, Shahbaz had Rs 1 trillion as savings. According to the newspaper Dawn, PML-N has never received any salary.
