Bonded labourers of Bihar and UP: Apex court issues notices on rehabilitation petition

Bonded labourers of Bihar and UP are forced to work hard under the burning sunlight. They are treated inhumanely. These workers, including pregnant women and children, are fed only once a day.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to both the state governments on a public interest litigation asking release and rehabilitation of at least 187 bonded labourers of three brick kilns in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The petitioner alleged that these labourers are made to work hard under hard burning sunlight. They are treated inhumanely. They are offered meal just once a day. These bonded labourers also include pregnant women and children.

A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao heard the petition filed by social activist Zahid Hussain and issued notices.

The petitioner says that he did not get any help from the National Human Rights Commission in this matter.
