Internet ban in Kashmir symbolizes “collective punishment”: Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society

The temporary restoration of 2G mobile internet service has observed as many as 70 suspensions since it was restored in January this year.

Srinagar: In a recent report, a prominent rights group in Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society,  active in the Kashmir Valley, has called the communication blackout a symbol of collective punishment. The ban on 4G mobile Internet services in Kashmir continues for more than a year in Kashmir. The internet bane has been in force in the Valley since August 5 last year.

However, on the 16th of this month, these services were experimentally restored in two districts, Ganderbal and Adhampur. The group stated in its report titled ‘Kashmir’s Internet Siege, “The multi-faceted and targeted denial of digital rights is a systemic form of discrimination, digital repression and collective punishment of the region’s residents, particularly in light of India’s long history of political repression and atrocities.”

The report says that these internet disruptions are affecting the supplies and other services needed for the people of Jammu and Kashmir who are already living in the shadow of an ongoing war and emergency.

The multi-faceted and targeted denial of digital rights is a systemic form of discrimination, digital repression and collective punishment of the region’s residents, particularly in light of India’s long history of political repression and atrocities.”
