lawmakers’ salaries, allowances reduced for corona care
New Delhi: In view of the emergent situation caused by the Coronavirus epidemic, allowances and salaries of the MPs have been decided to be deducted. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha Secretariat have issued separate notices in this regard. The constituency allowance for all the MPs has been reduced from Rs 70,000 per month to Rs 49,000 monthly.
This arrangement will be effective from 1st April 2020 to 31st March 2021. Under the office expenditure allowance received by MPs, the amount received for stationery and postal expenses has also been reduced from Rs 20,000 per month to Rs 14,000 per month. Other concessions will presently remain unchanged.
President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the ordinance on Tuesday for a 30 percent cut in the salaries of MPs. It is to be noted that the format of this ordinance had already been approved by the Cabinet on Monday.
The salaries of the MPs have been deducted as a part of efforts to collect extra fund to tackle with COVID-19. The salaries of the president, vice president, and governors have also been deducted at 30 percent. At the same time, the funds received for the development work in the constituencies have also been suspended for two years. The money will be credited back to the country’s Consolidated Fund.
