PM announces Rs1000 crore immediate relief measures in Amphan hit Bengal
Kolkata: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced here in Kolkata that Rs 1000 crore would be given for immediate relief measures for the damages caused by Amphan. He assured all Central help and stood with the people in the time of crisis. Mr. Modi undertook an aerial survey along with the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of the Amphan hit South and North 24 Parganas districts.
Mr Modi said, “The State and Union Governments stand with the people, who have been affected by Cyclone Amphan. In the month of May, the country was busy with elections and at that time we had to combat a cyclone that battered Odisha. Now, after a year, this cyclone has affected our coastal areas. People of West Bengal have been worst affected by it.”
“The whole country is with you. The Centre will stand beside you at all times. I had come to meet all of you but not possible due to Covid-19, ” Mr. Modi added.
” To ensure minimum loss, the State and Union Governments have worked together. However, we couldn’t save around 70 lives and we do feel sad about it. We are with them at this hour of grief. Rs 1000 crore advance assurance will be given to West Bengal. Rs two lakh would be given to the next of kin of the persons deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the persons who got seriously injured due to the cyclone in parts of West Bengal, ” Mr Modi said.
“We are battling a pandemic on one hand and there is a cyclone situation in some parts. Dealing with the pandemic requires social distancing whereas battling the cyclone requires people to move to safer areas, ” Mr. Modi added. Mr Modi also said, “All aspects relating to rehabilitation, reconstruction will be addressed. We all want West Bengal to move ahead. The Centre will always stand with West Bengal in these testing times. Despite these contradictions, West Bengal is fighting well. We are all with West Bengal in these adverse times.”
He said, “I assure my brothers and sisters of West Bengal that the entire country stands with you in these difficult times. A team will be sent by Centre to conduct a detailed survey about the damages caused due to Cyclone Amphan and the current situation of the affected areas. All aspects relating to rehabilitation & reconstruction will be addressed. We all want West Bengal to move ahead.” The Prime Minister was addressing a review meeting at Basirhat with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar and other state officials.
Mr Modi, accompanied by Mamata Banerjee, conducted aerial surveys of the cyclone-hit areas. The Prime Minister also took part in review meetings, where aspects of relief and rehabilitation were discussed. Earlier, Mr Modi reached West Bengal today to take stock of the situation in the wake of Cyclone Amphan. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received the Prime Minister at the airport.
