SC and J&K to clarify its position on Mehbooba Mufti release

The court also asked the Center what is the maximum period of detention of a citizen and what is the reason for continued custody of Ms. Mehbooba Mufti?

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Jammu and Kashmir administration to clarify its position on the release of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. This order has come after Ms. Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti has appealed for her mother’s release.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, while hearing a petition filed by Ms. Iltija, her lawyer Nitya Ram Krishnan, asked her to present her appeal before the concerned administration.

The court also asked the Center what is the maximum period of detention of a citizen and what is the reason for continued custody of Ms. Mehbooba Mufti?

The Supreme Court told Solicitor General Tusshar Mehta, ‘You should also take a stand on both these grounds.’ The next hearing is scheduled for October 15.
