Secondary, Higher Secondary examinations 2021 in West Bengal to be overshadowed by election?

Due to the assembly elections scheduled to be held in April-May 2021, it is not possible to conduct secondary and higher secondary examinations in February – March.

Kolkata: There is uncertainty regarding the secondary and higher secondary examinations in 2021 to be conducted during Covid crisis as well as the assembly elections due in April-May next year. Over 10 lakh students are preparing to take the exam next year.

According to sources, the February-March secondary and higher secondary examinations are unlikely to be held. With the assembly elections due in April – May, the question arises whether these examinations will be held before or after elections.

Meeting with Education Secretary

The Acting Chairman of the Department of School Education, Karthik Chandra Manna, Board of Secondary Education, and Abhim Mazumdar, Chairman, Curriculum Committee, had a meeting recently with Education Secretary. Courses and exam dates were discussed.

The meeting revealed that there would be no examination in February. However, it is not yet clear when the examination will take place in 2021.

Some senior officials of the school education department said that students should be given five to six months to prepare for the exam if any change takes place in the syllabus.

According to sources, only 35% of 10th class syllabus is completed in January, February and March. Many schools were closed in February due to the Coronavirus crisis, while all schools were closed from 16 March.

Course not yet decided by the board

The test is taken in schools before the board exam to assess students’ preparations, but since it is not yet clear when the schools will reopen, there is no question of the exam date.

The board is yet to determine the syllabus. Teachers are not able to take online classes for students in rural areas. The state school education department has not yet decided when the schools will open in the state. In this case, if the schools are open after pujo (Durga Puja), only a specific part of the course can be taught.

According to board sources, there are some issues due to which the board is less likely to conduct the examination in February-March.
