Styrene gas leaked from Visakhapatnam Chemical plant, 5 dead more than 200 sick
Hyderabad: At least five people, including an 8-year-old boy, have died and more than 200 others have fallen sick after Styrene gas leaked from Vishakapatnam Chemical plant. They were admitted to various hospitals in Visakhapatnam in the early hours on Thursday.
Union Home Minister Kishan Reddy has confirmed while talking to a private news channel. He said that five people have died due in a gas leakage from the LP Polymer Chemical Plant near Gopalpatnam area.
Sources said all five people have died while undergoing treatment at King George Hospital (KGH) in the port city. Police have arrived at the chemical plant along with an ambulance and a fire engine. which affected about five positions.
The gas reportedly spread over a radius of about three kilometers. It affected at least five villages including R.R. Venkatapuram, Padmapuram, B.C. Colony, and Kamparapalem. Residents near the Chemical Gas plant reported of burning sensation in their eyes and difficulty in breathing, officials said.
Many cows and dogs also died in this incident. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation tweeted ‘There is a gas leakage at LG Polymers in Gopalpatna. Requesting Citizens around these locations not to come out of the house for the sake of safety precautions.”

People in masks were seen carrying others who showed signs of difficulty in breathing. The exact cause of the leak is yet to be confirmed, officials said.
The NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in the area and rescue operations are underway.
