Typhoon Amphan kills 72 people, damages worth Rs 100,000 crore in Bengal
Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today said that 72 people were killed due to “Amphan Toofan”. She said that the storm had wreaked destruction in various parts of the state including Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee said that the damage caused by the coronavirus has not been accurately estimated but the damage is much higher than what we may have speculated.
Mamata Banerjee said, “I appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit in the Sundarbans area. It is a matter of trouble for us. We need to work together.” Mamata Banerjee said that Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah has spoken to her today and assured for all possible helps.
The Prime Minister has also said that at present the whole country stands with Bengal. No deficiency will be left to help Bengal. This is a time of challenges for us and we pray for the people of the state come back to normalcy as soon as possible.
Mamata Banerjee said, “I have never seen such a disaster in my entire life.” The Chief Minister said that Rs. 2.5 lakh would be given to the families of those who lost their lives in the storm. She said that most of the people had died due to falling trees and power lines. She also said that 15 out of 72 people are from Kolkata who died in the storm. Mamata Banerjee said that Typhoon Amphan had hit the coastal areas of Bengal at a speed of 185 per km.
It is to be noted that yesterday Mamata Banerjee had said that a loss of Rs 1 lakh crore has been incurred in the state due to the Amphan typhoon.
It hit with a speed of 135 km per hour from Kolkata. Trees have fallen on a large scale in many areas and power supply has been cut off. Dozens of buildings have cracked. Calcutta Airport is completely shut.
