Mamata Banerjee writes to President on mysterious death of MLA
Calcutta: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind Wednesday saying that the BJP is trying to tamper with the facts of the suspected death of MLA Devinder Nath Rai from Hemabad, Uttar Dinajpur. In 2016, was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly on a CPI(M) ticket but in 2019, he joined the BJP.
The body of the 63-year-old assembly member was found outside a roadside shop near his house on Monday morning. He left the house at one O’clock at night with unknown people. Rai’s family and the BJP have alleged that the assembly member has been murdered and hence should be investigated by the central agency.
On Tuesday, the BJP delegation met the President and demanded a CBI inquiry into the entire matter. BJP leaders have demonstrated outside police stations across the state. Mamta Banerjee wrote that Rai’s body was found outside the mobile shop where he used to meet the people. This letter has been submitted to the President by Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien.

Mamta Banerjee has written that the statement made by the BJP delegation is not based on facts. She has written that the preliminary investigation and postmortem suggest that he has committed suicide due to the stress of debts. According to the suicide note found in his pocket, two such persons have also been identified. Therefore, I want to say that the way the BJP is presenting this whole matter is not correct and it is not a political issue.
Mamta Banerjee has written that her government immediately started an investigation and the CID took action after the incident came to light. Mamta Banerjee said that equal opportunities are provided to all political parties in West Bengal. We are saddened by the death of the Member of Legislative Assembly and we bring out the facts and pray for the peace of his soul.
On the other hand, the BJP commented on Mamata Banerjee’s letter, saying that it was trying to cover up the mistakes of the government and the party. BJP General Secretary Rahul Sinha said that there have been recent political murders in Bengal. All the killings have been tried to look like a suicide.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no statement has been released by the CID. The suicide note contained the name of a man called Neela Sinha. He was arrested from Malda yesterday. Police are investigating into the matter. The wife of the assembly member has told the police that he had taken a huge loan from the bank to run the rice business.
