New Delhi: Former Team India all-rounder Irfan Pathan is all set to return to the ground. Irfan Pathan can be seen playing in the Sri Lankan Premier League scheduled to be held next month.
Apart from Irfan Pathan, New Zealand opener, Martin Guptill has also expressed his desire to play in the Sri Lankan Premier League. It has been claimed that Irfan Pathan and Guptill are among 143 foreign players who can be selected for the league.
According to the reports from Sri Lanka, Pathan and Guptill are among the 143 international players in the tournament list starting next month. Irfan Pathan announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket last year. Pathan has currently expressed a desire to play in a foreign league.
If Pathan plays in Sri Lanka Cricket League, he will become the second Indian player after Yuvraj to play in any foreign league. A Sri Lankan newspaper claimed that 143 foreign players are ready to play in the tournament. Now it depends on the selectors as to how many of these players are to choose.
Sri Lankan club players will also take part in this tournament. There are a total of 24 premier clubs in Sri Lanka, in which one or two players get the opportunity to play in the League. In addition, 80 cricketers who have contracted with the Sri Lanka Cricket Board will make their claims for the league.
A total of 4 franchises are participating in the Sri Lanka Premier League. 23 matches will be played in the tournament and these matches will be held in 4 grounds. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board had envisaged starting this League in 2018. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board wanted to start the League between 8 August and 22 August, but the league has been delayed due to the government’s refusal to allow foreign players.
