6 Islamic State militants, a police officer killed in Iraq
BAGHDAD: Six Islamic State (IS) militants and a policeman were killed in an operation against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq’s Salahuddin and Diyala provinces. Iraqi paramilitary forces, Hashd Shaabi, said that security forces raided on ISIS militant shelters in the al-Zarga area of Tikrit, the capital of Salahuddin province. Security forces killed six militants in the operation.
Diyala Province Police Officer Ahmed al-Shimmary said that IS militants opened fire on a police checkpoint situated in the Al-Abbara area in the northeast of the provincial capital of Baquba. One policeman was killed and another was injured in the firing.
Earlier, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi said the Iraqi army would launch a major operation against IS militants and that Hashd Shaabi would be on the front lines of security forces in the operation.
