New Delhi:  India on Wednesday was elected as a non-permanent member to the UN Security Council with 184 of 192 votes for a two-year term.  This term of two years will start from the first day of January 2021. Mexico, Norway, and Ireland have also been inducted into the Security Council.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed his gratitude to the world community for supporting India’s membership of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The Prime Minister tweeted.

Deeply grateful for the overwhelming support shown by the global community for India’s membership of the @UN Security Council. India will work with all member countries to promote global peace, security, resilience, and equity.”

India has claimed one of the five seats available to African and Asian states. India’s candidature was unanimously endorsed by the 55-nation Asia Pacific Group at the United Nations Security Council in June last year.

Previously, India has served as a non-permanent member of the UNSC on seven different occasions.
