United Nations financial crisis | Three billion dollars required for 2021 budget
United Nations is facing a severe budget crisis as many member countries have failed to make annual payments to the organization
United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the United Nations would require three billion dollars for the 2021 budget.
Mr. Guterres said at the fifth committee meeting in the proposed budget schedule for 2021, ‘We would need a total of three billion dollars to fully implement our plans. It has recorded a decrease of 2.8 percent compared to the year 2020 despite additional initiatives and mandatory activities.’
Significantly, the United Nations chief announced last October that the organization was facing a severe budget crisis as many member countries had failed to make annual payments to the organization.
Following the announcement on the budget crisis, the United Nations took a number of measures such as restricting staff travel, limiting air-conditioning services, in order to cut spending. UN spokesman Stephen Dujarric said in April that the organization was facing a budget crisis due to the Covid-19 epidemic.
