Washington: US President Donald Trump has said that he has the option to break ties with China. Mr. Trump commented in a statement on Twitter on Thursday.

A day earlier, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said that it is not possible to shrink the economies of the two countries at the same time.

Mr. Trump tweeted: “It was not Ambassador Lighthizer’s fault (yesterday in Committee) in that perhaps I didn’t make myself clear, but the U.S. certainly does maintain a policy option, under various conditions, of a complete decoupling from China. Thank you!”

On Wednesday, Mr. Lighthizer told the US Congress that the economy of the two countries cannot be reduced at the same time.

Earlier, the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that top Chinese politicians have promised to fulfill Beijing’s responsibilities under the first phase of a trade deal between the US and China.

The US president on Wednesday signed a law banning China, accusing the persecution of Uygur Muslims. China then also threatened to retaliate against the United States.
